I have been hoping that the Church would open up some of their projects to outside help. Last week, Joel Dehlin announced that the church unit websites will soon be more open to general development.
This is welcome news. It's a good step in the right direction. Next, I hope they open-source the Membership & Leadership System (MLS). That would be fantastic!
In the long run, they need to move all MLS functionality to the web, and only maintain the local client for dialup machines. Making the Unit web sites more open and modular will open the door for this porting and transformation of MLS online.
As a ward clerk, a programmer, and web developer, this made my day!

As a ward clerk also I'm looking forward to the day when I can do MLS work from home. Sadly I'll likely have a new calling several times over by the time they get that established as slowly as things tend to happen in this arena!
This will be a good move. I'm actually kind of surprised... it doesn't seem too "church-like", to me-- usually everything in the church is so very governed.
