I was just listening to an Engines of Our Ingenuity podcastnetcast on the Constants of Nature, by Andy Boyd.
Boyd discusses Richard Feynman's exploration of nature's constants (like the speed of light) saying, "Feynman realized that if the fine structure constant was somehow even a tiny bit different, the universe we experience would not be the same. Certainly, human life would not have evolved."
Boyd says this with reverence at the amazing nature of the universe. I think to myself, "Sounds planned to me!"
If the constants of the universe are inexplicable, the "Holy Grails" of science as Boyd says, then are they really only randomly determined? Or are they a clearer indication of intelligent design?
This question may simply be unanswerable. An answer would never unify belief. If we find that the constants of nature simply have to exist (ie. they force each other to be), then some will claim God couldn't have built the universe any differently, thus we don't need a God to start it. But the fact that we have a universe so precisely ordered confirms a believer's faith and only raises the question "By what power?" Because otherwise it just makes sense.
