TED Talk: Adam Grosser on Renewable Refrigeration
First, watch the presentation. It's short, to the point, and effective.
This presentation is important on several levels; it emphasizes the simplicity of the solution, the breadth of the problem, and the great potential for change. I personally see how it could improve my life, and I already have electricity and traditional refrigeration! In the comments following this TED talk, lots of people came to the same conclusion. We need something like this for everyone the world over.
Here's what I would like to see come of this research:
- simple, user-serviceable refrigeration
- powered by renewables and/or waste heat
- open patents allowing local construction and service
- paired research with insulated case designs for prolonged efficiencies, home-built and serviced.
I personally have a need for an off-grid, renewable, self-serviceable, long-lasting refrigeration system for emergency situations, and maybe even day-to-day usage. As I ponder green-home designs, this is one major feature I lack. Could it even be used as a supplementary cooling source on passive homes?
I'm encouraged by this and other, related technologies. I feel that our current systems are usually brute-force, over-engineered, complicated solutions to simple problems. There are others working on similar solutions. May the most open tech win!
